A Hybrid course: Make VR + Learn in VR Only 1 session left! August 16-20, 12pm EST
At UniVirtual Academy, we provide students with an opportunity to develop new technology skills and rediscover academic subjects through the new medium of Virtual Reality. Together with peers from different US cities, students will work in small groups to create real and imaginary applications of newly acquired skills and knowledge. In every course, students will use Virtual Reality technology and storytelling as a pathway to improve the 4Cs: creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. Using the 4Cs, students will not only gain an understanding of the subject matter but will also practice interdisciplinary skills necessary for college and career readiness.
In this unique camp, we are combining the immersive magic of learning in VR with practical skills of creating VR space and 3D objects. Every day, you will begin with the immersive Biology-Ecology learning in our VR space followed by the basics of Unity coding and Blender 3D modeling.
By the end of the course you will be able to import a 3D object you created in our VR environment.
PART 1: 1.5 hour of live instruction in VR PART 2: 1 hour - coding session
What are the rules of living on Earth, and why are they important? Are we heading into an ecological disaster, and what can we do to reverse or slow down trends? If you catch yourself pondering these questions while daydreaming, this course is for you.
In this interdisciplinary course, students will tackle ecological, environmental, biological, and chemical questions to understand how various species living on Earth are interconnected with each other and their environments. Before coming up with solutions on how to save the environment, we want our students to gain an understanding of how things work and why.
In the first module, students will learn about elements in the ecological hierarchy and what different ecologists study. They will study what factors determine ecological activity in an ecosystem, how they impact biodiversity in different biomes throughout our planet, how energy flows through ecosystems, and how toxins accumulate in our food webs.
COURSE TAKEAWAYS: 1. Students will review different elements in the ecological hierarchy: population, community, ecosystem, biome, and biosphere. 2. Students will discuss the factors of ecological systems and will understand what factors influence biodiversity on our planet. 3. Students will understand how we measure an ecosystem and what an energy flow through an ecosystem is. 4. Students will become familiar with food chain and energy chain concepts.
DAILY PART 1: BIOLOGY - ECOLOGY
This course will be an introduction to creating a VR experience. During this course, you will receive the basic knowledge of how to create games and applications. You don’t need any programming experience to take this course.
It is a 2 in 1 class: You will learn the basics of Unity with C# to build VR applications. You also will learn how to create 3D models using Blender to use in your VR space.
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: Zoom ready PC (VR ready PC is recommended, but not required), Oculus Quest 2, USB cable, 3 button mouse.
ITINERARY: Introduction & setup, Unity Basics, C# Basics, Input > Output, Oculus Input, Blender Basics, 3D Modeling, Rigging, Animation, Export > Import, Show and tell.
DAILY PART 2: VR UNITY CODING AND BLENDER 3D MODELING
