OUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Active Learning
Students actively participate in the creation of their learning experiences instead of passively consuming VR content. We offer both - creating inside of our VR Learning Environment without any coding as well as constructing VR itself by learning the basics of Unity, C# and Blender. This leads to higher student engagement, better retention and subject comprehension.
Technical Skills and Social Skills
We focus on building these 21st century skills through our engaging cross-disciplinary immersive curriculum. All of our classes are designed around collaborative hands-on projects. In small teams participants learn to analyze and debate different viewpoints, brainstorm, construct arguments and present their ideas in a form of an interactive role-play. As a summative assessment, students review peer projects, learn to give and receive feedback.

Collaboration and Empathy
Our courses stage real-life or hypothetical situations where students become immersed in the subject or their interest. Participants embody characters to experience different viewpoints. We promote inquiry-based learning with the immediate application of student’s prep-work in class.

LEARNING
. . OUTCOMES

The UniVirtual Academy provides students with an opportunity to develop new technology skills and rediscover academic subjects through the new medium of virtual reality. Together with peers from all over, students of UniVirtual.Academy will work in small groups to create real and imaginary applications of newly acquired skills and knowledge.
Knowledge retention
through increased focus and concentration in VR
First-hand understanding
of emerging technologies and their applications through integrated cross-disciplinary classes
Advanced Acquisition
of 21st Century Skills: Communication, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Creativity
All classes are designed by subject experts and education psychologists from top US universities and ran by certified VR facilitators.

WHAT FAMILIES SAY

FREQUENTLY
. . ASKED QUESTIONS

Is a headset required? What if I don't have a VR headset?
You need to have Oculus Quest 1 or Oculus Quest 2. If you don’t have it at home, we will send you an Oculus Quest 2. You can either buy it for $299 + taxes or rent it from us for $65. You can start with renting, and if you later decide to buy it, the rental fee you paid will be applied towards the purchase price.
What headset are you sending?
We are sending you Oculus Quest 2.
Can I change or reschedule a class if the time does not work for me?
If you miss or cannot attend a class, you are welcome to join another group, if their time works. If not, you can use the missed class's credit toward another class.
What if I don’t see the course I like?
Please, let us know here about courses you would like to see, and we'll do our best to make them available soon.
Is VR safe for teens?
VR is recommended for kids 12 and up. As with any screen time, time limits are important. For VR, doctors recommend breaks every hour for at least 10 minutes. Our classes last an hour, which provides a comfortable duration for our students.
Why VR for education?
When compared with traditional “flat” online education via Zoom or similar platforms, there are several important areas where immersive (virtual reality) education outperforms.

First of all, virtual reality (VR) gives a real sense of presence, and students in live VR are able to establish better socio-emotional connections with their classmates and teachers than if they only had a flat online experience. For this reason, live group classes that leverage immersive technologies are better able to make use of collaborative group projects and teach students critical communication and collaboration skills.

Second, VR not only increases presence, focus, and concentration (which in turn leads to increased material retention), it also increases student motivation and engagement. Students are excited to do it, much more than sitting in another zoom class or reading a textbook.

Third, VR has been named the “ultimate empathy machine” since it allows users to experience any situation firsthand. Students can embody different characters which makes it easier to present or debate different points of view.

Forth, in VR students can safely experience and test anything that otherwise could represent a challenge or a hazard. Visiting both micro (inside of a living organism) and macro (space) words, traveling to the bottom of the ocean or in time offer tremendous opportunities in studying not only STEAM but also humanities.

Last, but not least, VR has proven to increase information retention. When a student is engaged in classwork and is using all of his senses (visual, auditory, tactile), learning outcomes speak for themselves. Information retention is substantially higher.
Why UniVirtual.Academy? Our educational methodology.
Knowledge retention pyramid

In UniVirtual.Academy we leverage the power of storytelling, game-based learning, and immersive technologies to boost engagement, unlock creativity, and increase retention.

We use participatory (active) educational methodologies that demonstrate higher material retention rates than traditional lecturing, reading, or video. Our instructional strategies include media presentations, simulation, jigsaws, discovery learning, quizzes, puzzles, group research, case studies, debate, peer-to-peer teaching, cross-assessment, storyboarding, role play, and project-based constructivism.

Our methodology is deeply rooted in constructivism: Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget. We follow their belief that social interactions play a critical role in children's learning. Through such social interactions, children go through a continuous process of learning.

We expand students’ understanding of emerging technologies and their applications through integrated interdisciplinary classes.

We teach a variety of subjects including STEM, Entrepreneurship, economics, and cultural studies. In all of our courses, we emphasize leadership and empathy with the 4 Cs: communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. These are the essential 21st-century skills that our students will need to be successful throughout their lives, no matter what their professional calling will be.
